The 5cm ball is UV-protected. Peel away a bit of 'bark' on the plant you want to propagate.
Fill the plastic ball with any grow medium, then put it on the stem.
Roots will form within a week or 2.
The ball comes in two colours – green and transparent.
The transparent ball allows you to see the roots develop so there's no need to open it to check.
Also available is a hybrid ball, which is half green and half transparent, which provides a “window” to see if the roots have developed sufficiently for transplanting.
WHAT IS AIR LAYERING?
It is a method of cloning where the clones maintain a connection to the mother plant and grow roots before you cut them off. Seeds don't produce identical plants as genetics vary a bit, but air layering propagation produces plants that carry all the genetics of the parent just like taking "normal" cuttings using a propagation dome and rooting hormone does. That way you are guaranteed to get a 1:1 copy of your favourite phenotype of a certain strain. The clone will establish a healthy root system by taking up nutrients from the mother plant, no need to add fertiliser just keep the medium inside the ball moist.
PROS:
This is an easy and guaranteed successful way to do clones, even if you have no experience in cloning. You will see new roots in as little as 10 days. Air layering also means that you don't have to spend money on rooting gel and a propagation dome. And another nice pro is that you can take much bigger cuttings compared to the conventional way of using a clone dome.
CONS:
None.
TIPS FOR AIR-LAYERING:
You must use a plant in the vegetative stage that is healthy and strong. Taking cuttings from feminised plants often results in hermies, do yourself a favour and only take cuttings from plants which have been grown from regular seeds. Remember to keep the medium inside the ball moist or you'll soon have dead roots. After 10-12 days roots should be visible. Simply cut the branch below the Air Layering Ball, and transplant the clone into a pot or the ground. Done!
